The Family Medallion

Often we think of marriage as the joining of just two people.  In reality, however, marriage is much broader.  It is also the coming together and merging of family and friends.  This is even more apparent when the couples themselves have children.  With children present, marriage becomes the proclaiming of a new family.

Today more than one in four marriages involve children.  Many brides and grooms come together with one or more children present from previous relationships.  Other couples may already have children of their own.  The Family Medallion was created to assist with this need for “family weddings” and to provide resources for supporting family commitments.

Until recently, few wedding ceremonies acknowledged the family nature of marriage or the mixed emotions children may feel about sharing their lives with a new parent or perhaps new brothers and sisters.

Studies show that children accept a parent’s remarriage more readily when they feel included in the wedding plans and are given a tangible symbol of being embraced by the new family.  The Family Medallion provides this message of love and affirmation.

Couples may choose to present Family Medallions during the wedding  service or as a special gift.  When used during the wedding, The Family Medallion is usually given to children after the couple is pronounced husband and wife.  Brides and grooms may also share Family Medallions with each other or give them to significant persons to highlight the importance of their family ties.

It can also be presented on other occasions including birth, baptism or blessing of a child, birthdays, anniversaries, religious holidays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, adoptions and leaving home for college or military service.

Each Family medallion order includes a copy of “Celebrating the New Family” a resource booklet for using The Family Medallion during the wedding service and a keepsake box.  This information is easily adapted to any religious or civil wedding tradition.

The Medallions are made using the “lost wax” method of casting which guarantees that every Family Medallion will always be of heirloom quality.
